NTUC May Day Rally

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Singapore Labour Movement’s (LM) Modernization Seminar, which was first held in 1969. On May Day Rally 2019, NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Ng Chee Meng addressed some 1,600 attendees comprising union leaders and tripartite partners. SG Ng reaffirmed the LM’s commitment to champion the interests of workers and to ensure that they enjoy better wages, better welfare, and more importantly, casting an eye in the future to secure better work prospects. The relevance of tripartism, the collaboration between the unions, employers and the Government, was also emphasised in helping the Labour Movement achieve these better outcomes.

Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Heng Swee Keat took to the rostrum to reaffirm links between the PAP and NTUC which have had close ties for almost 60 years. May Day Rally 2019 is Mr Heng’s first public event as DPM, with the cabinet reshuffle taking effect on 1 May 2019. DPM also highlighted three strategies as Singapore transforms for the future.

  1. To transform the economy with tripartism as a key asset to the effort.
  2. Prepare the workforce for the future through lifelong learning.
  3. Ensure economic growth remains inclusive for all workers, especially low-wage workers, seniors, and those who have left the workforce early.
